Started in August 2020, India’s farmers protest is now seeing its second edition. Here are the latest updates for ongoing protest.
Farmers’ Protest Updates: During the second day of the farmers’ protest, police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, causing traffic congestion near the borders and inconveniencing local residents. Farmers’ organizations have announced plans to meet with the Central government on Thursday to address their concerns.
Police fired tear gas shells to scatter farmers attempting to breach the police barricade at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border and continue their ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest on Wednesday. To maintain law and order, Delhi police have enforced Section 144, prohibiting tractor-trolleys and large gatherings.
Traffic Advisory Amid Farmers Protest:
Heavy traffic jams were observed at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border due to the farmers’ demonstration and stringent security measures. Here are Thursday’s traffic advisories for Delhi:
- Interstate buses and trucks bound for Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh should divert from Majnu Ka Tilla to the Signature Bridge via Loni Border and Eastern Peripheral Road.
- Trucks from Azadpur Mandi to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar should divert from Azadpur Mandi, use the service road towards Outer Ring Road, and proceed to Rohini Jail Road Sector-18 and Badli Metro Station.
- Only DTC Buses and cars are allowed from Mukarba Chowk towards NH-44 via DSIIDC Cut to Narela and Safiabad Border.
Honorables on farmers protest:
Many public personalities and opposition leaders including SP supremo Akhilesh Yadava and senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor have expressed their resentment against the central BJP government.
- Public intellectuals and artists issued statements in support of workers’ and farmers’ sectoral industrial strike and Grameen Bharat Bandh on February 16.
- Union agriculture minister Arjun Munda urged protesters for cooperation and open communication during negotiations with farmer leaders.
- Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor emphasized the democratic right of farmers to protest and have their voices heard in the national capital.
- Akhilesh Yadav criticized the BJP government for their treatment of farmers, citing the recent tear gas shelling and lathi charging as contradictory to honoring late farmer leader Chaudhary Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna.
The protesting farmers have presented 12 demands to the central government, including the implementation of a law ensuring minimum support prices for all crops, as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission report. They seek better crop prices promised by the central government.
